Tours Completed: 2024-Here Comes the Sun Tour
Team Role/Function:
How did you become a Castaway? I was recruited to join the cycling squad in 2024 by my fraternity brother Josh Cantor. After a few years of supporting from the sidelines, I've turned that support into action and am looking forward to my second tour.
Why are you a Castaway? When I signed up for my first tour in 2024, this was already a very personal issue for me, as I have multiple family members and friends who have been affected by cancer, including my Mom, who is a breast cancer survivor, and my friend Sune Smith, who we lost to breast cancer far too young in 2016. Last summer it became even more personal when my wife, Brogan, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to early detection, and top notch treatment from the amazing folks at UM's Sylvester Cancer Center, she has made a full recovery. Given this experience I am even more motivated this year to support our friends at Sylvester and the goal of ending cancer.
Outside a kayak/bicycle, what is your "essential" gear? A good attitude. It is a long way from Miami to Key West, no matter if you cycle, run, or paddle, so staying positive and remembering why we are doing this is key.
My Family: I have been married to my wife, Brogan, since 2018. We have one fur baby, a beagle named Molly. My older sister lives in Charleston, SC, and my parents split time between Charleston and Fort Myers.
Where are you from? Lexington, KY
Where'd you go to high school? Sayre School in Lexington, KY
Where'd you go to College/Grad School? University of Miami for undergrad and law school
Where do you work and what’s your role there? I'm an appellate attorney at Kubicki Draper
Favorite music/artists: Grateful Dead, Phish, Jason Isbell, Billy Strings
Favorite movies/genre: Big Lebowski, The Aviator, Boogie Nights
Favorite books: The Memory of Old Jack by Wendell Berry, Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Personal Fun Fact: I spent a semester of high school at The Outdoor Academy, which is an outdoor leadership school at Eagle's Nest Camp in Pisgah Forest, NC, and have seen the band Phish over 40 times.
How have I helped carry out the CAC mission of funding cancer research and honoring those who have fought the fight? I hope to bring awareness and financial support to Castaways' mission by participating in the ride to Key West.
